I have been interested in Fado music ever since i heard about it. It has that beautiful southern European sound which just goes so well with those warm mediterranean evenings, good food, nice wine, and ancient cobble stone streets.
one particularly elderly taxi driver was listening to some 'kick ass' guitar Fado the other day, and i had to ask him about it. (yea, music like this can be " kick ass" too). I noticed he was listening to a station called "Amalia FM" , and when i asked him, he then proceeded to tell me about the lady called Amalia after whom the station is called, whom he referred to as the queen of Fado, who , according to him, made Fado popular worldwide. That's as much as I could make out anyways with my beginners Portuguese level.
I took a trip to the Fado museum the next evening, but unfortunately it was closed. However it was a worthwhile journey as i discovered that this is something of a hornets nest of Live Fado venues. So when I heard the GTI teacher Dorothy (a true music lover!) was coming the next day, I suggested we go here to check out the scene.
The restaurants here charge a lot by Portuguese standards, but at this stage I have had my share of cheap restaurants with NO Fado...... this night was to be different. And, we were not dissapointed, from a music perspective anyways.
